Daily migrations

The Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia publishes the final results of the 2022 Census of Population, Households and Dwellings on the daily migrations of the economically active population performing occupations, pupils and students, by sex and type of settlement, by municipalities and cities.

According to the census methodology, daily migrants are considered persons who work or study outside the place of their usual residence, i.e. persons who live in one and work/study in another settlement in the Republic of Serbia or abroad, provided that they daily[1] or several times a week return to their place of residence.

There is a total of 1 048 825 daily migrants[2] in the Republic of Serbia. About three-quarters of daily migrants (75.9%) are economically active persons who perform an occupation[3], and almost one-quarter (24.1%) are pupils and students studying outside their place of residence.

* the 2022 Census was not conducted in the territory of AP Kosovo i Metohija.

The majority of daily migrants live in Region Šumadije i Zapadne Srbije (31.2%), and the least in the Beogradski region (20.1%).

[1] It is considered that a person returns to the place of permanent residence every day even in case when he/she is absent due to the nature of work, i.e. having a 24-hour shift or even a two-day shift of 48 hours (e.g. in traffic, health or some other services).

[2] When interpreting the data, it should be noted that persons who live in one and work/study in another city municipality of the City of Belgrade or the City of Niš are not considered daily migrants, if the locations of the place of residence and the place of work/study are located in the area of the same settlement, i.e. on the territory of the settlement of Belgrade, i.e. the settlement of Niš (for example, a person who lives in the city municipality of Zvezdara and works/studies in the city municipality of Novi Beograd is not considered a daily migrant, because that person lives and works/studies in the same settlement, i.e. in the settlement of Belgrade).

[3] Daily migrants who simultaneously work and study outside their place of permanent residence are included in the contingent of economically active daily migrants.
